The nature and identity of Jesus Christ was an evolving work in progress to Christians of the 1st century. According to the Pauline literature before the Roman Jewish War of 66-70 AD, Jesus Christ was a cosmic God whose existence was only revealed by reading between the lines of the Old Testament. Orthodox Jews claimed Hellenized Jews such as Paul were twisting and misinterpreting the Old Testament by inventing a Jewish Messiah called Jesus Christ. Only after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD was Jesus Christ revealed through the Christian gospels as the Son of God who lived on earth as a man, died on the cross, and rose from the dead sometime during the reign of Tiberius.

Orthodox Jews at the end of the 1st century claimed Jesus never existed, the gospels were fiction, and that if Jesus really did exist he was just a man, not their God. Christian congregations, called "synagogues of Satan," were barred from attending Jewish synagogues. Jews and Christians were theologically at war and Revelation, written circa 95 AD, was a product of that war. Revelation is a high-camp camouflaged Jewish satire and parody of Jesus Christ with numerous gematria riddles that reveal Jesus Christ as a Man and a Beast through the number "666."

The Toledoth Yeshu (The Birth of Jesus), a possible contemporary of Revelation, is another example of Jewish anti-Christian literature.

The full name of Jesus Christ appears only three times in early manuscripts of Revelation, late Byzantine copies add the name Christ to verses 1:9, 12:17, and 22:21. The name Jesus Christ is never used as the subject of a sentence!
